Stock Market Game

A team of Questar III students “earned” more than $11,000 playing the stock market in a semi-annual competition.

Brittany Gilbert (Greenville High School) and Ryan Wilhelm (Catskill High School), students in the Business Information Systems program at Columbia-Greene Educational Center, finished in third in the Capital Region Stock Market Game after earning $11,422.83 this spring.

The Stock Market Game is a curriculum-based teaching tool that challenges students to invest a hypothetical $100,000 online stock portfolio. Sponsored by the New York Stock Market Exchange, the program familiarizes students with the stock market, current events, market trends and how the economy works.

Competing against 81 other teams in the region, Gilbert and Wilhelm deftly managed a portfolio that earned an 11.4 percent return since mid-January despite uncertainty in the national and world markets.
This is the first year Questar III has participated in the Stock Market Game. Teacher Mary Andrus said it is an excellent way to teach students about the economy.

“This program is exciting. It represents 15 weeks of strategy and effort of buying and selling stocks, mutual funds and bonds. I will use it again – it combines real world experiences with what students learn here in the classroom,” Andrus said.
