We’re back, and we’re really down to the wire now with less than three weeks left before that final bell. And with spring finally up and well here in Niskayuna, the opportunities are endless.
Firstly, make sure to make sure to swing by Craig this Saturday, the 18th for the 32nd Niska-Day celebration. The theme for this year is Vegas and this year’s festival is sure to be another successful and fun outing. Come early around 10 to catch the parade, and stay late to catch the fireworks! The weather should be absolutely gorgeous this year (somewhat atypical of Niska-Day tradition), so make sure to bring the sunscreen if you plan to be out all day!
Also coming up are the Boy’s lacrosse playoffs. Ranked number one in New York State class B, and number four in the entire nation—this group of boys is truly a sight to see. With the state championship game slotted for June 8th in Pittsford, NY (right outside of Rochester), the lights at St. John’s Fisher College are ones that players and superfans alike hope to see!
And finally to all of you 18 and overs out there are you a fan of ScoresUp.com? Do you see the value of a business education in schools today? Do you want to make sure that the future accountants of the world actually know what they’re doing so we can avoid the financial struggles we see today? Well if you have any answer to any of the questions above and live in the Niskayuna district, make sure to get out and make your voice heard at the budget vote this Tuesday, May 21st at Niskayuna High School.

After seeing Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby I was not very impressed. It follows the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel very closely and is a very good film to watch for literary elements. The film follows Nick Carraway, a man from the Midwest trying to get his fortune in the stock market. His neighbor is Jay Gatsby, a mysterious man who was once in love with Nick’s cousin Daisy. The film follows the lavish lives of this interesting group of people, and focuses on maybe the not so great parts of the 1920s. The film starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire has the narrator, Nick Carraway. DiCaprio was a perfect fit for Gatsby and when he was on the screen he shined. DiCaprio fit the essence of the 1920’s Gatsby and his character was well developed. Throughout the film, many literary elements that you may have talked about in English class were shown on the screen. In my opinion it was cool at first, but then they started to get overdone. I felt like I was back in my English class trying to analyze what this whole “Green Light” was all about. My critique of the movie is that it was two and a half hours long, which was extremely long for this movie. Because it followed the book line by line, it was agonizing at some parts to watch. It lacked action and some of the other characters didn’t have any depth. Carey Mulligan who played Daisy, looked good for the role, but was subpar to building the character. If I didn’t pay $11.50 for this movie I would have definitely left. On the positive side, the music in the film was fantastic! It wasn’t music from the 1920’s era but the music portrayed themes that the movie was all about. Another positive is that the movie had a fantastic setting, the costumes and party scenes were perfect! Other than the party scenes which there were very few of, the movie was very boring and not for my liking. If you would like to go see this for yourself go try it out, it is still in theatres and in 3D!

Once again, Prom was a night to remember. Food, dancing, and friends proved to be a recipe for fun. Skeptics admitted that Prom was more than expected and they had much more fun than they had anticipated. The dinner of chicken parmigiana, pasta primavera, and other delicious side dishes was a favorite. For those who went to prom in years past that went again this year had argued that the Italian-inspired cuisine was one of the best in years. However, it was a consensus that the music was sub-par. Last years DJ set the bar high, and it did not seem like expectations were met. Regardless of the minor details, or personal preference, the company of your classmates and friends was enough to make this years Junior Prom nothing short of wonderful.
