DMB

The SPAC season has finally begun, kicking off over the weekend with Dave on Saturday and Sunday. Although the forecast was cold and rainy, this didn’t deter Dave fans from flocking out in thousands. As always, DMB was amazing, the atmosphere was incredible. As Senior Brittany Perrin said, “It was one of the best concerts I had ever seen. Everyone was so happy to be there, and even though it was bad weather people still had a good time.”

Both nights were amazing but Sunday night was one of the best concerts I personally have ever seen. Dave came out playing Tripping Billies, a very upbeat song and set the stage for the rest of the night. Early in the night he played JTR, if you don’t know Dave the lyrics go “Rain, Rain, Rain down on me”. Even though it didn’t rain, playing this song made people go crazy. He also played very popular and well know songs such as Gravedigger, You and Me, You Might Die Trying, and Two Step. And his encore was the best encore he may have ever had. He came out and played Big Eyed Fish (a very funky song) and then played his trademark song, Ants Marching. He and then band then walked off the stage, a few people left SPAC but the majority of the people their stayed, a few minutes passed and the crowd started chanting “ONE MORE SONG!!!” After a while the lights went back on and he came back on the stage and played Halloween. Both nights were great, and we all can’t wait for next year.

Boys Lacrosse Tops Yorktown

It was the talk of the town. The boys’ varsity lacrosse team finally took to the regional semifinal stage after some added anticipation a day prior due to some unexpected weather, but nonetheless, they came to play. After completing a perfect regular season—including two huge victories over out-of-state powerhouses—this was the biggest competition they’ve seen thus far. The Yorktown Cornhuskers out of Section 1 brought with them three Division-1-bound defenders, matching up with our trio of attackmen, setting the stage for a great game to come. The Warriors once again opened up the scoring, earning the first and second goals of the game, one courtesy of senior Lucas Maloney. That lead didn’t last long, as we fell 6-3 with 9 minutes remaining in the first half. The Silver Warriors were unable to gain possession, as Yorktown dominated face-offs. The first half ended with Yorktown up 8-7 off of a surprising d-pole goal. The biggest deficit came in the third quarter when Niskayuna fell 10-8. But momentum swung when Tyler Pantalone won a faceoff and drove to cage to make it 10-9. This was only the beginning of the Warriors second-half surge, as sophomore Aidan O’Brien was next to find the back of the net. He found his own rebound and buried it home. Virginia-bound junior Mike D’Amario scored the game winner with about 5-minutes left, and sophomore John Prendergast secured the win with two minutes remaining, scoring on an empty net as the goalie scrambled behind the goal. The boys head to Regional Finals where they face Cornwall this Saturday at UAlbany’s John Fallon Field at 3:30. Good luck boys!

UB Court Gets Revamped

For years the SUNY system has been looking for an “it school” flagship.  Across the nation in states like Ohio, Florida, and Michigan there are schools that attract tens of thousands of applicants because of their stellar academics, and amazing sports.  New York is are notorious for not having this type of public school in lieu of 4 “University Centers” which all serve their own image, (The party/football school, the nerdy/ hippie school,  the science/ baseball school, and Buffalo).

Over the years, the University at Buffalo has been leading the pack as New York’s flagship school with over 28,000 students currently enrolled.  However, in an effort to gain more national attention (and attract potential students) the university is updating their basketball court.  Like many new courts, the center will feature a tinted outline of the state coupled with “The State University at Buffalo” with “New York” in large font.  Time will tell how this move will work for the SUNY system and Buffalo in particular.  This is a move that has worked for many schools, particularly out west—so hopefully the same results will turn out in the east.

2013-14 High School Budget

It is official that the proposed 2013-2014 Niskayuna High School budget was turned down on its May 21st proposal. The next Board of Education meeting was held yesterday, May 28th, and we students can only hope that a resolution was made. In order to bring the budget down to a comfortable level, some drastic cuts were suggested that were not favorable among Niskayuna students. These cuts include, but are not limited to, a return to half day kindergarten, the elimination of 2 high school foreign language and 2 art teachers, elimination of middle and high school music ensembles, and the elimination of all levels of athletics (modified, jv, & varsity). None of these cuts have been confirmed, however, and the budget has another chance to pass on revote day, June 18th.
